Attack in tram in Utrecht

On the morning of 18 March 2019 a man opened fire, shooting arbitrary passengers on a tram in Utrecht. 

On 1 July 2019 the suspect had to appear in court for the first pro forma hearing. The Court had decided that his presence in court was mandatory. The second pro forma hearing was held on 23 September 2019. 

The pretrial hearing was held on 16 December 2019. Having considered the content-specific aspects of this case during the week of 2 March 2020, the Court gave its ruling on 20 March 2020 (in Dutch).

The suspect was sentenced to imprisonment for life. The Court furthermore held that he had acted with terrorist intent. One of the victims, represented by Arlette Schijns, was relieved. All civil claims she and her family members had filed in the criminal proceedings were awarded as well.
